Sunnis and Shia

In the spring of 2004, fighting increased not only between Sunni militias and coalition forces, but also between radical Shia groups and the coalition. Although the Shia population held more power in the Iraqi government than when Hussein was in power, some Shias did not want American forces to stay in Iraq. These radicals believed that American forces were occupying their country, and that western influence was evil. Soon, a Shia cleric named Muqtada al-Sadr created a militia called the Mahdi Army. The Mahdi Army was made up mostly of young, religious students who lived and studied in a poor section of Baghdad called Sadr city. At first, al-Sadr led this group of men to critique American involvement in Iraq without violence. However, in April 2004, the American military closed al-Sadr's newspaper and arrested one of his top aids. Al-Sadr delivered a fiery sermon to his students, and the Mahdi Army was created.
